Prep Volleyball Rankings
When Prep Volleyball issues its first rankings of the club season, you can usually count on Front Range to make an appearance. This year is no exception with three teams ranked in their respective age groups. Leading the pack is 16 Blue, ranked #9, and 18 Black, ranked #25. Both teams are the highest-ranked Colorado teams in their age groups. Congratulations to 15 White, who is listed as a team that received strong consideration.
“It works when I use it.”
by Tim Engels, M.A., sports psychology consultant to Front Range Volleyball Club
This is a comment that comes from players on a pretty regular basis. They're talking about using serving routines, pre-point routines, breathing, Sally Eats Noodles, etc. – the things that help them control their thoughts and play their best.
How can we make sure that we use these mental toughness techniques when it's really important to do so? How do the best athletes make sure they use these same techniques when it's really important for them? You know the answer – we use these mental toughness techniques every time. Always use them, in live ball practice and every point of every match against other Front Range teams at the Silo, in every point of every power league match, every point of every qualifier match, etc. That's the only way to make sure we're going to use them in the really important points.
Some very exciting things are happening for Front Range teams these days. Most teams broke up the first day of Crossroads. Seven teams qualified for the gold metal round. Many matches are turning on just one or two points. Teams are learning to fight to win, spending very little time playing to not lose. We've got the Northern Lights qualifier coming up soon and there's work to be done to get even better than we already are so those close matches turn our way.
Here's how: 1) Use your routines every time, before every point. That's the only way you can guarantee that you'll use it at critical moments. Using your routines will help you play your best at those critical moments.
2) Believe that every touch is the one that can make the winning difference. This is the belief that Black has been using, the one that's helped them qualify for JO's.
3) Believing that every touch is the one that can make the winning difference, be looking for every touch to come to you knowing that you're the one who'll get the ball up, control it, and make the winning difference.
4) Practice and play with the discipline it takes to use your routines every time, and to be looking for every touch to come to you. This discipline is very difficult and it separates the best from the rest. This discipline breeds success and the success breeds confidence that you can do it again next time.
Practice and play with tremendous discipline in the coming month. Let's see how far your skill, discipline and competitive determination will take you at Northern Lights and Power League playoffs!
And Now For Something Completely Different...
