Water For Athletes
by Katherine Lindgren

Meet The Writer
Hello Front Range Volleyball Players!  My name is Katherine Lindgren and I played for FRVBC for about 3-4 years and then played for the University of Kentucky where I earned my degree in Nutrition.  I am currently a clinical dietitian at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and I will be writing articles on sports nutrition throughout the season.  The most important subject I would like to talk about is water.  I will also be discussing Ideas for Tournament Foods, Energy Balance, Supplements and Eating Disorders during the year.  Nutrition is extremely important in athletics and I hope to be able to guide you to healthy eating for optimal performance.  I wish you all a great year!

Water
WaterWater is essential in athletics because of its many important functions in the human body.  It functions to regulate body temperature, lubricate joints and most nutrients essential to life can be used by the body only because of their reaction with water.  Although water provides no energy or calories, it is one of the most important elements in sports nutrition as our bodies are 75% water.  One sports nutritionist claims that 99% of athletes are dehydrated because they wait until they are thirsty to drink.  Thirst has been linked with a 2% water weight loss and studies have shown a marked decrease in performance of these athletes.  Once athletes are thirsty, they are dehydrated so you must drink whether you are thirsty or not.  Dehydration can cause the following problems:

  1. Decreased blood volume meaning that the heart must work harder to pump enough blood and oxygen to working muscles

  2. Exhaustion will occur sooner

  3. The body becomes overheated more easily

  4. Kidney damage may occur if severe enough

Guidelines For Hydration

Before exercise         Drink 2 cups fluid (16oz)
During exercise         Drink ½ to 1cup of fluid every 15-20 minutes
After exercise            Drink 2 cups (16oz) for every pound of fluid lost

  • USE COOL WATER OR SPORTS DRINKS (COOL FLUIDS ARE BETTER ABSORBED BY THE BODY)
  • YOU WILL KNOW YOU ARE HYDRATED WHEN YOUR URINE IS CLEAR
  • SPORTS DRINKS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR EXERCISE LASTING LONGER THAN 60 MINUTES

Athletes are encouraged to follow a drinking schedule because if they try to drink a large amount of fluid at one time, they cannot reach adequate cellular hydration as easily.  (Also they spend a lot of time in the bathroom).  It might help to follow a schedule where athletes drink (8oz) fluid in-between classes at school and then follow the guidelines above for practices.  AVOID CARBONATED DRINKS, CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL........ALL IMPAIR HYDRATION.

Good luck and work to be the 1% of athletes who are hydrated for the best performance possible!

How Do You Go Back To The Front?

Ask Front Range's personal soldier, SSG William Dawson! After undergoing a surgical procedure for a non-combat related condition in Germany, SSG Dawson should be on his way back to Iraq. During his time in Germany, Dawson passed the time by watching volleyball on television. Dawson is excited to get back to his "home" in Iraq, "Mortaritaville", so named for the near-daily mortar fire that the base receives.

Want to send SSG Dawson your own get well wishes? Contact Erin or Eduardo at Front Range for either email or snail mail addresses.

The Welcome Mat

12 Pink newbies

Please help us roll out the welcome mat and welcome this year's crop of new Front Range athletes. This week, we welcome our 12 Pink newcomers to the fold. Pictured above, from left to right, are: in the front row: Kaylie Miller, Brooke Alexander, Sasha Naro, Branen Berta, and Alex Middleton In the back row: Grace Marlowe, Taylor Cordova, Emily Nicholson, Cassandra Sulmeisters, Annika Hacker, and Ali Miller. We are excited to have you join our family!

And Now For Something Completely Different...

The term "side out" originated because William G. Morgan's rules for mintonette, the game we now call volleyball, took elements from baseball. Each team's service turn lasted for three serves, or outs. Once the serving side used all three outs, the serve went to the other side. Want to know more about volleyball's origins? Check out a Wikipedia article on volleyball or look at the FIVB's history of the game.

February and March calendars are now available online. Be sure to check it out here.
