Beasley Plot For World Domination Uncovered!

cameron and cayden

If you have seen James Beasley in the gym recently, you may have noticed a now-familiar haggard-but-happy look on his face. James and his wife Heather doubled the size of their family in one fell swoop on May 10th with the birth of twin boys, Cameron and Cayden. Cameron, weighing in at 5 lb, 2 oz and Cayden, 4 lb 14 oz, join Caleb and Chloe in the Beasley clan. Mother and boys are all doing well. James, on the other hand, is a bit more apprehensive about the future. "I'm going to be paying for diapers for the rest of my life, " joked Beasley recently.

Breaking Down, Breaking Up, Breaking Through

15 white trainsI recently had the pleasure to work with a high school pole vaulter.  She was stuck at 6’6”, and was feeling discouraged because she was nearing graduation from high school and hadn’t achieved some of the goals she’d set for herself, including vaulting 7’.  She was breaking down.

She did several important things to turn herself around.  First, she developed a list of all that she had accomplished.  Second, she developed a list of the significant attributes and qualities she possessed and tapped into to help her achieve those accomplishments.  Third, she reacquainted herself her original goal for pole vaulting – to fly.  Fourth, she rededicated herself to her process goal (to fly) and her achievement goal (clear 7’).

With renewed passion and focus, she worked diligently with her coach to continue developing the intricate moves necessary for success in vaulting.  She rededicated herself to practicing the basics her coach had her working on: speed on her approach, pole plant, leg drive up, push off and kicking out to clear the bar.  Her belief in herself and her hard work paid off.  Several weeks ago, she cleared 7’ at a meet and then cleared 7’6” on her next vault!  At the final meet of her high school career, she cleared 7’6” again to win the meet.  She’d broken through!

18 blak huddleIt takes courage to face a breakdown and work to break through the obstacles that are stopping you.  Have you already created some breakthroughs in your game this season?  Is there an obstacle that’s got you stuck right now?

All Front Range teams have at least one more significant competition coming up – AAU’s.  You have another opportunity to compete and break through to a higher level of accomplishment.  You may also be feeling tired from all the work you’ve already put in, breaking down mentally and physically.  As you approach this final part of your club season, follow the example of the pole vaulter:

  1. Put together a list of what you’ve already accomplished this season – all of the improvements you’ve made in your skills, tactics, strength and conditioning and mental toughness,
  2. Use this list and get help from your coaches and parents to develop a list of the attributes and qualities you’ve demonstrated to make those improvements
  3. Remember what you love about volleyball
  4. Rededicate yourself to volleyball for one more month, give it all you’ve got, work with your coach and team
  5. Give yourself the chance to break through one more time this season at AAU’s.
